I went to the Bird’s Nest for the first time, and it was to see Wang LeeHom 王力宏. For the ones who do not know who he is, Wang LeeHom is a FAMOUS pop singer in Asia. He was actually the first pop artist to sing at the Bird’s Nest, which was designed for use throughout the 2008 Olympics. The National Stadium has a capacity to fit 80,000+ people and it was packed!
Even though I had never heard of Wang LeeHom before until I came to China, I decided to join a group of friends to attend the concert. I really enjoyed it. He is a very talented artist, he played the guitar, the violin, the erhu, except for the drums which I am pretty sure he knows how to play. He had an orchestra playing for one of his songs. He performed a singing duet with a famous Communist singer of China. He had a group of children come on stage, and about 100+ people wear Chinese traditional costumes.
His songs were all in Chinese but he also mixed a bit of English. There was only one song I was able to follow, Yishou Jiandan de ge, which our speaking teacher gave us in class to practice in order to help our spoken chinese. The concert was full of Chinese culture and awesome performances. I absolutely don’t regret paying $20.00 to see a great show.
